Embeddable Search Breaks Barriers to Low-Cost Scalability

updated 7:12 a.m. PT, Tues., Jan. 27, 2009

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - Exalead, a global provider of information access software, today announced the availability of CloudView(TM) OEM Edition 5.0, an embeddable, scalable search and information application development platform designed specifically for ISVs and SaaS providers.

CloudView OEM Edition 5.0 is built on a new product architecture that significantly improves performance and improves embeddability, helping software product teams accelerate their time-to-market all while reducing the overall TCO. In conjunction with this product release, Exalead also announced a new OEM pricing framework that is flexible enough to accommodate the business needs of this diverse market. E-mail archiving, content management, product life-cycle management, storage, call center and other information management application vendors can now use Exalead CloudView technology to address the rapidly growing Web 2.0-based information access application market.

"As the use of traditional Web and Web 2.0 technologies including wikis, instant messaging, social networking, and collaboration has proliferated within the enterprise, users have come to expect the same simplicity, speed, and scale from their enterprise software providers," said Paul Doscher, CEO of Exalead. "The challenge for ISVs is to provide that same experience in their search capabilities without sacrificing the security and precision required for enterprise use. Exalead CloudView OEM Edition helps them deliver on that challenge."

Exalead CloudView 5.0 addresses the following design requirements encountered by information software vendors:

-- large amounts of data (petabytes) -- ability to aggregate, collate, and normalize data gathered from disparate structured and unstructured sources -- HTML, Microsoft Office documents and other files scattered across corporate servers, data located at SaaS providers, active and archived e-mail, relational data, proprietary application data, etc. -- web-based (fuzzy) and enterprise (precise) relevancy models -- small CPU and disk footprints -- large, difficult-to-forecast user volumes -- high peak user concurrency -- transparently supporting existing user interfaces, security models and data sources -- multiple language support (50+ languages supported)

Greater Scalability, Incremental Footprint

Exalead CloudView OEM Edition 5.0 uses an open, modular architecture that allows information management vendors to differentiate their products by providing dramatically better scalability while using only modestly sized hardware. This new level of scalability and lightweight footprint is accomplished through the use of a modularized system architecture that incorporates proprietary, Web-tested, high performance inter-process communications protocols. The new architecture is based upon research that has been on-going since Exalead's inception in 2000. These capabilities enable vendors to minimize the hardware requirements for their overall offering and better predict system performance and hardware requirements for customer deployments, maximizing customer satisfaction and reducing support calls.

Exalead CloudView OEM Edition 5.0 is currently tested to support 500+ terabytes of data per server cluster and more than 100 million documents on a single server. It is capable of indexing 30 million database objects in 10 hours and 60 gigabytes of mail data in a single hour; and can also index with speeds of up to 9000 documents per second. CloudView OEM Edition is used within Exalead's own Web search site and supports over 100 queries per second (QPS) per server.

Advanced Data Processing and Indexing

Exalead CloudView OEM Edition 5.0 offers powerful capabilities to optimize the data classification process. Advanced semantic technologies automatically analyze, categorize, enhance and align structured and unstructured data, enabling an ISV to efficiently make sense of the diverse data in an enterprise. This allows ISVs to ensure that their customers are delighted with the accuracy, precision, and relevance of the search results that they are presented with regardless of whether it came from the file system, e-mail archives, or an application database.

Moreover, all the natural language processing modules (lemmatization, dynamic categorization, spell-checking, spell suggestions, etc.) are designed to evolve automatically and in real-time as customers' data evolve, resulting in improved results with little or no cost of maintenance.

Total Embeddability

CloudView OEM Edition 5.0 is a SOA and WOA-compliant development platform that has been designed to be embedded into other software offerings. Its clean, modular architecture allows product architects to selectively include only those components that are required for their functional needs, thus reducing the overall footprint of the final product. Unlike other offerings, CloudView OEM Edition 5.0 is a truly "headless" product and exposes all of its search, processing indexing, administrative, and operations capabilities through a rich set of standards-based APIs. This enables rapid and easy integration and drastically reduces time-to-market for Exalead's OEM customers. In addition, the broadest possible support for operating platforms and programming languages and protocols ensures that developers will be able to easily install, configure and use the product in their development, QA, and build / package environments.

"Exalead's ability to integrate data and content is of growing importance in today's marketplace," said Sue Feldman, research vice president, IDC's Content Technologies Group. "For OEM partners, Exalead has developed a platform that allows for the development of many new vertically focused applications."

Pricing Model

Exalead provides a flexible pricing model for ISVs and SaaS providers. Recognizing that each OEM has a unique business model, Exalead's pricing framework is flexible enough to work with the preferred parameters for each OEM such seats, revenue, concurrency / usage, document count, and data size.

"Search is a key component of our solutions, but finding the right tool is crucial. We started with another leading search tool but switched to Exalead because it better provided us with all the elements we needed," said Martin van der Roest, founder and president of vdR Group, a software development company and an Exalead OEM Partner. "In addition to the functionality of the tool itself, Exalead's OEM-friendly pricing is a definite advantage. They license the whole product including a base set of connectors instead of a confusing array of separate modules, which conforms nicely with our own pricing model for our customers. Exalead is easy to do business with and provides a well-behaved, easily-embeddable application."

"At Exalead we've built our reputation by giving enterprise customers unprecedented access to their mission-critical business content," said Ranjeet Vidwans, vice president of OEM Sales at Exalead. "Now, we are making it easy for ISVs and OEMs to better serve their customers by providing a technology that is simple to integrate into current offerings and that addresses the design challenge of accommodating exploding data in a manner that is cost-effective for them and their end customers."
