マイクロソフトがKY州の学校群にクラウドソリューションを提供Exchangeを置換え、4年間で$600万ドルの節約を達成

マイクロソフトのクラウド戦略は、Azureを軸としたIaaS事業者加えて、自社のOffice関連ツールのクラウド化を通したSaaS事業もやっとスタート切ったところである。

このSaaS事業は、AzureのIaaS事業と同様に、マイクロソフトの従来のソフトウェアライセンス事業との競合にもなる事業モデルであるため、どのように棲み分けを行うのか、という事が大きな関心事である。

このニュースはマイクロソフト社が発表した内容で、自社のExchangeユーザをクラウドサービスに移行した、という事例である。

ケンタッキー州の学区全体、70万人の生徒、学校関係者を対象としたExchangeサーバのクラウドサービス化の移行である。この移行によって、ケンタッキー州は今後４年間で$600万ドルのコスト削減を達成できる、という事も報告されている。

教育関係市場への事業戦略はマイクロソフトは従来より力を入れており、長期的な事業戦略として全国規模でリソースを投入している。Googleは同様な戦略をOregon州に対して実施しており、Oregonにおいては、年間$150万ドルのコスト削減を達成できる、報告されている。

教育関係市場へのクラウドソリューションの導入の決め手は、次のような要件がキーポイントになる。

The system will allow students to use cloud computing for new email services, as well file storage and sharing, which the school system believes will help the young people in several ways. Firstly, they will learn computing skills required to become successful adults when they graduate from Kentucky schools. Beyond that, it will enhance the learning experience by promoting collaboration on assignments, both in and out of school.

"Historically, it would have required months and potentially years to migrate hundreds of thousands of people to a new solution," Chuck Austin, the school system's project manager, said.

The Oregon state school system adopted a similar cloud computing program earlier when it implemented Google Apps for Education. The system expects that it will save $1.5 million per year as a result of the cloud computing transition.
